A Letter from Pererenan

Notes on the first cutting of the Cruise collection — written from the studio at six in the morning.

A Letter from Pererenan

The studio sits a few hundred metres in from the coast. In March the air arrives in two distinct layers — a cool wash from the ocean at five, replaced by something heavier and sweeter by seven. We try to cut before the second.

This year's Cruise opens with eight pieces. A loose batik shirt the team has been pulling on every day. A pair of shorts cut from the same Armani satin we used for last season's evening skirt. And a casual top — a soft V — that I suspect will end up worn under everything we ship in the next six months.

We are smaller than we look. There is one cutter, three sewing tables, a steamer, and Wayan, who has been with us since the second collection and is the reason any seam in this building runs straight.

Watch for the lookbook next Tuesday. — N.
